They loved our mitten math lesson on Monday! First the kids estimated how many cubes they thought would fit into their mittens then they used the linker cubes to fill up their mittens. Then they dumped them out and grouped them into tens and ones. We finished up our lesson by traveling around the room to count by tens and ones that each of their classmates had filled their mittens up with.

BRRRR! It’s Cold Outside! Welcome to 2010!
After 2 relaxing weeks off it was time to get down to business in our classroom! We started our year off with a theme using the story The Mitten by Jan Brett. She also wrote the Gingerbread Baby and Gingerbread Friends and the kids love her peek a book pictures! We read a few other folktales of The Mitten this week also. We did some compare and contrast of the story versions and will also use the story The Hat by Jan Brett to compare/contrast using a Venn Diagram. We had planned to do this on Friday when we had the surprise day off from school because of the cold! We did work hard the 3 days we got back from break. We were working on digraphs of sh, ch, th, cth, and wh. In math we are working on using a hundreds board to see patterns and are looking forward to doing our “Mitten Math” when we get back on Monday! During centers this week the kids got to sort mittens by attributes, use mittens as non-standard measurement to measure things in the classroom, played “Mitten Bingo” using a + and – die to generate number sentences, and created a Mitten ABC order. They always work hard at centers. We got to make a cute Mitten Friend after reading the stories The Missing Mitten Mystery and The Mitten Tree.

Polar Express Day!
We had a really relaxing and fun last day before the holiday break. We read the story The Polar Express by Chris VanAllsburg and then sequenced the story and made these cute trains. The best part of the day was getting to where our jammies and lay on the floor, watch the movie, and relax. They loved it! We also got to have a sing a long in the gym. They were so cute singing! Tyler’s mom made some yummy cupcakes and brought us some juice and treat bags to finish up our day. Thank you Mrs. Erickson! Here’s a look at our last day of 2009 together!
We had a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus at our sing a long!
